About Derek Wilson (he/him):
I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (BCACC #23908) and Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCPA #11253334) with a Master’s degree in Counselling and a Bachelor’s degree in Child and Youth Care.
I have worked in a variety of settings, such as non-profit, alternative high school, community mental health, and private practice.
My background includes over 5 years of counselling couples, and over 10 years of working with adults, parents, families, and youth.
1) Couples
With couples, my goal is to support you with enhancing communication, increasing understanding, and repairing patterns of disconnection. My primary approach with couples is: - The Gottman Method (completed Levels 1 & 2 Training)
I also strategically draw on the following approaches, depending on your needs as a couple:
Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy
Imago Therapy
Internal Family Systems Therapy (Part’s Work)
Attachment Theory
2) Parents
With parents, I aim to empower and strengthen your relationship with your teen or adult-child through attachment-informed and evidence-based approaches in such areas as, but not limited to:
Boundaries & Expectations
Attunement & Secure Attachment
Intrinsic Motivation & Power Struggles
Authoritative Parenting
3) Individuals
With individual adults (18+), I draw on trauma-informed, strength-based, and solution-focused approaches to highlight your unique inner strengths, goals, and needs, while collaboratively developing your practical skills through tangible neuroscience-based strategies to process, repair, and problem-solve current challenges you’re facing, such as:
Anxiety
Depression
Task Paralysis
Grief and Loss
Sleep Issues
Family Challenges
Dysregulation
Overall, my approach is warm, welcoming, and grounded in research. I look forward to working with you and would be honoured to be part of your process, learning, and growth.
